Initial Consultation and Assessment:
Child: An initial appointment involves obtaining a thorough history with a child, his/her family, and getting to generally know the patient. Typically, this will be a 60 to 90-minute appointment, depending on age and needs. We will then decide collaboratively on a way forward, and when to follow-up after this appointment.
Adult: During an initial appointment, a thorough history is taken with thought given to current stressors and perceived difficulties. A comprehensive psychosocial assessment and a plan will be discussed collaboratively. This is typically a 60-minute appointment.
Follow-up and Medication Management:
For Everyone: Dr. Leavitt uses evidence-based medicine as her primary approach for psychiatric medication management, with special consideration given towards use of medications that are safe and FDA approved. Effort is made to help symptoms, while using the least medication needed. Diagnosis and targeted symptoms are discussed, options are discussed. Not everyone is started on medications, though, as sometimes it is preferential to try other therapeutic options prior to use of medication. Patients may be seen more frequently for follow-up, at least initially, if medications are started or there are safety concerns.
